Two main themes from the opera follow: the first - melancholic, in minor key, played by woodwinds - is based on Don Alvaro's aria; the second - optimistic, in major key - reflects the soprano, Leonora. Both themes also feature the Fate theme in counterpoint: In Don Alvaro's theme as a reminder of Fate and in Leonora's theme as an element that gradually changes the music's character - from serene and optimistic to agitated and tragic.
