Before reading on, try to make 3NT yourself! At the first table, South won with ♥ J after East played ♥ T and led a spade. East won the trick with ♠K and returned a heart, finessing successfully against South ♥ Q. At this point declarer had no chance, as West developed three heart tricks while still having ♠A as a side entry. At the other table, South played better. He let East's ♥ T hold the first trick. East continued hearts, and South's ♥ J won the second trick. At trick three he led a spade. The defenders could no longer develop three heart tricks, because East had no more hearts. So declarer safely developed a spade trick, his ninth trick in addition to two ♥ , two ♦ and four ♣ tricks.
