East led the diamond ace and switched to a small heart. Making ten tricks for an average score was easy, but declarer Ehud Friedlander was looking for more. He took the second trick with dummy's ♥ A and laid down ♠AK, dropping East's queen. Taking note of West's double of 3 ♦ and East low heart lead at trick two, he concluded that West held the diamond king as well as a heart honor. East needed to have the club queen in order to justify a vulnerable two-level overcall. Instead of a routine club finesse, Friedlander laid down the club ace and then the club king.
