East started with at least three of them. You play ♣A and ruff a club with ♦ 9, hoping that this card holds, and then draw East’s last trump with ♦ Q. This line seems a bit complicated, but it compares favorably to the primitive line of drawing trumps (except the unlikely case that trumps are 2-2 but hearts are 7-2 or spades are 6-1). So, did Massimo make the hand by the dummy-reversal line? The actual play was a bit different from the above description. Declarer didn’t bother to cash a third heart. Instead he played ♠A at trick three and started to ruff spades (In the book Famous Play Decisions by Terence Reese and David Bird, the authors speculate that D’Alelio paid insufficient attention to this hand, as Italy was already assured of qualification). The play proceeded as above, but on the third and final spade ruff East was able to discard a club. Thus declarer didn’t have a safe route back to dummy after cashing the ♦ K, and down went the grand slam. Themoral of this story is quite clear.An apparently insignificant detail made the difference between a victorious +2140 and a tragic -100. Do take your time while planning grand slam hands!
