964 The cognitive approach to diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation in regard to intellectual disability Shulamith Kreitler Abstract The chapter presents two different complementary approaches to the understanding, prediction and change of cognitive functioning and motivation in teenagers characterized by cognitive disabilities. One approach is that of meaning (Kreitler) which is designed mainly for application in regard to cognitive functioning, while the other is the cognitive orientation approach (Kreitler & Kreitler) which is designed primarily for application in regard to motivation. The theoretical, empirical, and the inteventionaltherapeutic applications of the two approaches were described in regard to a population of individuals with cognitive disabilities. The experiments presented in regard to prediction and change referred mainly to rigidity, memory and recall, description of images and drawings. The meaning approach enabled significant predictions and changes in cognitive functioning and the cognitive orientation approach enabled significant predictions and changes in the behaviors of the subjects in the examined domains. The adaptations required in the experiments resembled those usually applied regarding to other populations. It is recommended to integrate the described cognitive approaches in Chapter on page 73
