917 Transition to adulthood of youth with developmental intellectual disabilities: The effect of selfdetermination and future orientation Raz Mina Abstract This chapter describes the transition to adulthood of youth with developmental intellectual disabilities, integrating concepts and models from the literature on youth without disabilities. The first part of the chapter offers an innovative perspective based on characteristics of “emerging adulthood” (Arnett, 2007) in which youth with disabilities experience an “abbreviated transition paradox” compared to their peers without disabilities. The importance of transition programs within schools is emphasized, but also the need to develop a sequence of services tailored to these youth throughout their emerging adulthood not just during high school or a limited time thereafter. Further, as successful transition to adulthood is reflected by the ability to make decisions concerning the future, the second part of the chapter delves into self-determination and future orientation, and the influence of environment on their development.
