913 When asked about assistance by support staff and or parents in this area, adults with IDD expressed concern and reservations from asking and getting support from staff and parents. This concern is not surprising and is consistent with the attitudes expressed by support staff and parents regarding couple relationship, sexuality and parenting of adults with IDD and their role in accordance. Couple relationship of adults with IDD is perceived by support staff, as a means of learning life skills and not as an enriching experience in itself. Adults with IDD are perceived by support staff as limited in terms of insight and sensitivity to the needs of the other. With regard to their role, support staff focus only on the negative aspects of the relationship (problem solving and intervention in crisis situations). With regard to sexuality of adults with IDD, support staff show confusing attitudes, of support on the one hand and fear of harm and exploitation on the other. In accordance, the task of support staff focuses from their point of view on functional skills, restrictions and prohibitions and not on supporting and encouraging personal expression. With regard to the possibility of parenting, the support staff express an unequivocal negative position. The attitudes of the parents are in line with those expressed by the support staff, they focus mainly on the sexual aspect of the relationship and ignore the multidimensionality that characterizes couple relationships in general and experienced by adults with disabilities as well.
