911 Parents with an Intellectual Disability and their Children: Review, Policy and Intervention Programs Dorit Barak, Dorit Weshler and Carmit-Noa Shpigelman Abstract Background: Parenting of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) is a sensitive issue. Individuals with ID are frequently perceived as unfit to become parents. As a result, this issue is frequently overlooked in social discourse and policy planning, resulting in scarce knowledge and services for these families. Aim: The present chapter reviews research, acquired professional knowledge, and practices related to this population both in Israel and worldwide. Findings: The literature review raises various aspects on the parenting by individuals with ID, such as the absence of a database regarding parents with ID and their offspring, the challenges, needs, and barriers these families face, and existing intervention programs that promote parenting skills and support for those families or rather the lack thereof.
