192 The Mayor’s Greeting for the 2023 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition This year we marked the hundredth anniversary of the death of Eliezer Bern Yehuda - the reviver of the Hebrew language and the pioneer of Hebrew speech. Ben Yehuda proposed to call the piano ”Makoshit”; thanks to the small “Makoshim”, the hammers, that strike its strings. Makoshit is one of Ben-Yehuda’s innovations that was not assimilated into the Hebrew language, but the sounds of the piano were well assimilated and became the soundtrack of our lives and of our city. The city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa is proud to host for the 17th time the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. The Competition, which commemorates the legacy and artistry of the greatest pianist of the twentieth century, is one of the most prestigious, demanding and important in the world. We consider it an important cultural asset, for it encourages and promotes classical music, serving as a loyal ambassador to strengthen Israel’s image in the world and act as a central axis in the spiritual and cultural life of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Gifted pianists from all over the world, who come every three years to compete in this prestigious competition, Jury members and audience – all create a tremendous celebration for classical music lovers, and arouse curiosity and anticipation to discover who is expected to lead the field of classical piano in the future. So, until the names of the winners are announced, I wish all of you, the guests of the Competition, its competitors and judges, complete, high-quality and exhilarating enjoyment.
