128 The Israel Camerata The Israel Camerata Jerusalem is the leading chamber orchestra in Israel, performing regularly in Israel and abroad. The Camerata was founded in 1983 by Avner Biron, who has been its music director and permanent conductor ever since. During almost four decades of activity, the orchestra has toured all over the world, performing, among others, at Carnegie Hall in New York, Philharmonie Hall in Berlin, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and other major venues in Paris, Madrid, Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago, Beijing, Shanghai, Melbourne, and Sydney. The Camerata is highly acclaimed for its interpretation and recordings of an extensive repertoire, from the Baroque and Classical periods to the music of our time. In addition to the traditional repertoire, the Orchestra is involved in performances of unknown and newly discovered music of different periods, as well as premieres of contemporary works, Israeli music and works written especially for Avner Biron and the Camerata. As a chamber orchestra of thirty-five regular members, the Camerata frequently collaborates with renowned instrumentalists and vocalists (soloists and choirs) from around the world. Additionally, the orchestra is highly active in advancing young Israeli musicians and musical culture in Israel in general. Avner Biron, Conductor Avner Biron is the founder, Music Director and Permanent Conductor of the Israel Camerata Jerusalem. He has conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony, The Israel Sinfonietta Beer Sheva and orchestras throughout the world. He has served as Music Director of several festivals, including Abu Gosh and the Music and Nature Festival in Galilee. During 1994-2005 he was head of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where he established the department of Arabic Music, the department of Multidisciplinary Music and the Academy Chamber Orchestra. He was a member of the Standing Committee of the organization of Academic Institutions for Music in Europe (AEC). Biron began his musical career as a flutist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and as a solo flutist with the Israel Chamber Orchestra. He studied biology at the Jerusalem Hebrew University and conducting in Vienna and the Salzburg Mozarteum.
