As with most of Dvořák’s music, the melodies of the dances are as appealing as they are unique. The music flows naturally, revealing contrasting rhythms and joyous atmosphere. The orchestration is brilliant and rich, displaying magnificently a large spectrum of the orchestra’s colors. Dvořák humbly considered himself a “provincial musical craftsman”, who understood how music ought to be constructed and merely followed the rules. However, he was far from being a “diamond in the rough”. The elegant multifaceted nature of his works is obvious, and it makes it easy to agree with Brahms: this provincial Czech is an example of true musical genius. Tsilli Rudik
