English 53 Closed Room West North East South Nab Kvangraven Drijver Tundal Pass 1♣ 4♣ 4♠ Dbl RDbl Pass Pass 4NT 5♣ Pass 5♠ Dbl RDbl Pass Pass 6♣ 6 ♦ Pass 6♠ 7♣ 7♠ All Pass An auction from another planet! Three clubs were not enough for Bob Drijver (East), and he bid no less than four.At this point his partner Bart Nab was already sure that the opponents had at least an easy small slam, so… he doubled four spades, trying to tempt North into accepting a score of four spades doubled making six (plus 1190), which is still considerably less than six spades making. Nils Kare Kvangraven (North) didn’t fall into the trap and redoubled, and then the same story was repeated at the five level. Evidently, North knew that West was bluffing. Despite two “penalty” doubles by West he still invited a grand slam with 6 ♦ – but his partner rejected the invitation! Then West bid seven clubs. In view of South’s two signoff bids, bidding seven spades ahead of him was quite undisciplined. If North thought he could bid seven on his own, he should have done so directly as in the Open Room. Nevertheless, North had the right to draw his own conclusions from West’s peculiar actions. There remained the play, which was identical to the other room until the moment when South (this time – declarer) led the diamond jack. Perhaps during the auction West managed to convince himself that his opponents were cold for seven to such a degree, that during the play he was sure that he was fighting a losing cause, and his only chance was… to bluff his opponents once again by not covering in diamonds (perhaps declarer would infer that he couldn’t have the king). The problem was that nobody was taking his bluffs seriously any more. Ulf Haakon Tundal ran the ♦ J, preparing to concede one down had East produced the king. When the jack unexpectedly won, he repeated the finesse and managed to discard three hearts to the tune of plus 2210 and a 20-IMP swing.
