West overcalls one diamond. North supports his partner, denying a four-card major. East has a diamond fit, but he should show his spades first after being unable to open the bidding. East-West discover their double fit and bid four spades, but South is good enough for five clubs after his partner supported. In fact he needs from his partner only one ace to make six. Both sides can make a game, but at all tables North-South played a club contract. One can see that bidding five clubs is quite easy, while for East-West it is not so obvious to compete to five spades. Those aggressive pairs who competed to five spades were rewarded when their opponents went on to six clubs. In all cases, East-West made no mistakes in defense and took their aces. Board 3.
