After some questions about his opponent’s system, he bid Seven Diamonds. “Reprieved from the noose, I doubled” (Bird). South was less happy. Next came a ♥ K lead from west – out of turn , but North unwittingly put down the dummy instead of calling the director. This blunder was responsible for the second and last undertrick (as North’s most logical choice would have been to forbid a heart lead). The real damage was done when he bid 7 ♦ – yet at that point there was no indication that his opponents were not cold for a grand slam (provided they can count their aces). Let’s try to imagine what would have happened had East been more disciplined and told his partner the truth with 5 ♦ . West would have been forced to bid 6♣, missing two aces, but North would not have known this, so he would have sacrificed to 6 ♦ . Against that contract one can hardly imagine a legal heart lead by East, so the end result might have been Six diamonds by North, doubled and made. Conclusion: David should be congratulated for showing brilliant foresight and making an unorthodox bid which resulted in a huge gain. The reality was probably a little different. Our hero even admits: “It’s taken me over a decade to notice that the opening lead was out of turn!”. The real lesson is not to become overly depressed after making a dumb bid. It could still somehow become a big winner.
