Forquet, on the other hand, assumed that double of 2 ♥ was penalty, showing hearts (remember, the opponents had not promised that suit), so he had to bid naturally. One possibility was a jump to four diamonds, but that would have left clubs out of the picture. A cue-bid of three hearts seemed to be a much more elegant solution. Why is this a cue-bid (according to Forquet’s logic)? Because with long hearts North should double, forcing East to bid his spades. Since a natural 3♥ bid does not make sense, he expected his partner to understand this as a cue-bid. Unsure about his partner’s 3♥ bid, Garozzo bid a sensible 3NT. When the “cuebid” was repeated, he unfortunately assumed it to be natural. From Forquet’s point of view the repeat cuebid of 4♥ was a brilliant way to force his partner to bid a minor suit, which he would have raised to six. The moral of this sad story: A top pair must have specific agreements about common situations which might arise during a match. Doubling for takeout according to Robson and Segal is a sensible solution, while Forquet’s idea of using 3 ♥ as a cuebid may be a superior agreement, if previously discussed.
